DAY 1: In the Beginning...

WEEK 1: A Place to Stand

Welcome to the first week of the Summer Learning Journey. For our first week, we are going to be learning all about the land habitats here in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is going to be a great adventure!

DAY 1: In the Beginning...

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]

According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.

To learn more cool facts about New Zealand, check out the Tourism NZ website. Read the fun facts posted on the website and choose your ‘Top 3.’ On your blog, post your ‘Top 3 Fun Facts’ about NZ in your own words.

Fact 1: The Moari name for New Zealand is Aotearoa which mean the long white cloud
Fact 2: New Zealanders are called kiwis, but is not a kiwi fruit. It is New Zealand’s native bird that is flightless
Fact 3: New Zealand is one of the least populated countries in the world with over 4 million populations.

Why we should have Headphones?

In class we were either making a persuasive writing why we should have headphones, or not have them. I have decided that we need them. I hope my writing is really persuasive and will persuade you to have headphones. Thanks!

Why do we need headphones?
Do we need headphone in class? Here are some reasons why we need headphones!

Why I think we should have headphone’s. Here is the first reason why we need headphones. We need headphone because they are just great  when you want to listen to music and then people don’t want to listen to it, YOU NEED HEADPHONES!

Secondly, we need headphones because we need to concentrate on things like reading, writing and maths, and not other things like people talking about their motorbikes and their cool new thing they bought.

Headphone’s help when you are working, they help you listen to words that you can not pronounce, because you can go on to the ‘Collins Dictionary’ and then you can listen to the word and no one will ever notice that you were trying to pronounce that word.

Lastly, if you need to watch a video and people don’t have headphones, the classroom will be booming with loudness and you won’t  be able to concentrate on what you are working on, like your reading plus. That’s why we need HEADPHONES!

WHY? They help so much with work, even try it, I have, they are AMAZING! Everyone needs HEADPHONES! Like literally you need them!

In conclusion
In conclusion I think that I have made it clear of why we need headphones and why they help people with hearing things on their chromebook/computer and concentrating on their work. You can also type faster and also you can do a heap of work.
SO I SUGGEST TO GET THEM! :)

Look into his eyes

In class we had to make a post about Look into his eyes. We had to write about it here is my writing!
It is nighttime:

A boy walks on a road:
He sees a figure:
He feels happy:

In the nighttime the moon lit up the outer space and you could hardly see all the buildings which looked like a blur. The boy slowly moves down the harshly lit street. “ Where is my dad?”

The boy watched a faint, dark figure pass by as he
starts to wonder why the figure looks like his father. He springs back down the street towards the figure and his father that he thought was dead was standing right in front on him.

He feels ecstatic but also angry because it was four years since the day he saw him and waited so long and he didn’t come back to him the day he left and thought he was dead but no.

What is Blue?

In class we had to make a poem about a colour. My buddy was Sophie and our colour was blue. We thought is was easy but at the start it was a bit hard then we got use to it. Please comment how we could improve.

What is Blue?
Blue is a bluebell,
A blueberry,
A diamond,
Shining in the box,
A peacock,
The most vibrant colour out of the lot,
Say Hi not good-bye,
Let the deep blue ocean fly
Just like the sky,
Blue is for sad
But is not bad,
Blue covers the sky
So bold, so high,
Blue balloons pop non-stop,
Should we stop?
No we should not,
Blue rivers flow,
Just like the blue whale blows,
Blue icy water crushes threw my teeth,
The blue candy floss melts in my mouth,
Like the snow melts in the summer,
Our blue t-shirts ,
Nanas light blue eyes dazzle,
Like crystals shimmering in the sky.

Mysterious Beach Trip

In class we have been learning to make an alliteration poem, my poem is based on when these four girls go to the mysterious beach. Please leave me some comments down below about how I could improve. An alliteration poem is where you have to put as many words as possible starting with a letter, we used the letter M.

Mysterious Beach trip

Molly,Mary,Marcie and Miranda

Marched to the mysterious beach .

Mary moaned from hunger

wanting macaroni and cheese.

Molly moved to the monstrous shack

looking at the magnificent full moon

she magically turned into a malachite Malaysian tiger

moving towards the mysterious marble moon

as if compelled.

Miranda looking mysterious

Molly moved to the green majestic mushrooms

As she murmurs to a marvellous maroon mosquito.

Marcie marched to the log and moaned

Mary moved and was heading

to the macaroni.

”Hey Mary, that’s my macaroni,!”

mumbled Marcie loudly.

As Mary took the first bite

she pulled out one of the green mushrooms.

Miranda munched on mouth-watering marshmallows

Getting messy

With white magnolia marshmallows

In her marvelous maroon hair

She murmured in a melancholy voice

She pulled the moshed marshmallows

Out of her maroon hair.

Safe Cycling

At school Constable Joss helped Room 5 and the year fours in room two, to learn how to do the hand signals for biking on the road. Our main focus was to put our writing in present tense not past tense. Here is my writing!

Cycling
Finally, it’s time to go,  I am a bit scared, but really excited at the same time. I’ve been waiting forever though, it’s time, let’s go!  Come on guys, keep going.

I’m dodging around the little orange cones. Oof! I just hit one of the orange cones. Racing up the straight, I feel as if I am flying through the air. As I’m going round the corner I have no hand on the wheel, see, AHH, ow that hurt I just fell off my bike, but at least I’m okay. I have to look back and that is a RED CAR  keep on going lets go on. Stop at the yellow line, let’s park up here and OOF next time I should slow down more.

“ I will set up the ramps and ladder” Yells Constable Josh. Ramps and ladder! What I don’t think I’ll be able to! . As I come to the ramp I’m getting really anxious that I’m going to fall down the side, but OOF…..  I made it YES I actually made, know for the big ramp up I go down I go. As I whirl around the curve.  The ladder,  I pedal fast then BUMP! BUMP! BUMP! That is so FUN! As I slowed down for the next corner. AHH! Stop PHEW that  lucky I didn’t crash into you! Know I have to turn around and BLUE CAR , through the cones, round the corner over the small sea saw the over the big sea saw then over the bumpy broken ladder. This is so fun!

DING! It’s lunch time

Hunting & Fishing

In class we had to write a description about hunting and fishing in present tense. If people weren't at hunting and fishing competition they had to think and look at pictures our teacher took that day. Here is my writing about hunting and fishing and also there is a photo of what we caught.

Hunting & Fishing
As I jump out of the truck, heading towards the trout and eel weighing to weigh our trout, out of the corner of my eye I spot a line of carcasses hanging up on a red and blue truck. As we weigh our dead animals, we have to weigh a hare for the combined weight of animal which could be an eel, goat hare or a possum. Hopefully we win. BEEP! BEEP! Goes the weigher “This is 3.22 kg” says the weigher. That is a big hare.  As I watch the people chuck our hares away I wonder what they do with the hares everyone catches. My friends and I watch the man put our trout on display so everyone can see them. The biggest trout is 8kgs which is massive. They have won.

The smell of the wind lingers up my nose, it smells like death. By looking around and hearing everyone it looks like everyone is trying to say that they got the biggest deer. As I walk over to the marquee to get our number and spot prize I only just notice there are about one hundred people standing and talking looking around like they have never seen such a big competition. We decide to go to the big truck with the deer, chamois and boars. I try to pass everyone to get to the big red and blue truck. As the men open the bright orange fencing they let all the people in to see the dark brown, black and light brown coloured deer and different dead animals. I feel happy and excited about hunting and fishing but quite nervous at the same time, although there is nothing to worry about. By looking at the deer it looks as if it is fresh from watching the rosy red blood trickle out of its mouth to the dirty ground. As I walk over to touch the deer antlers with a sudden touch I feel the warmth rush through me.

Walking back to the trout I press lightly on one of them and I push my finger down the scales and they feel smooth one way and rough the other way. While I watch the trout I spot wasps and flies entering the fish into the insides laying eggs and eating the fresh flesh of the trout. I look in a chilly bin and I spot an eel twirling around inside trying to slither out.
This is what I caught: 53 hares, 3 goats and 1 magpie.

The End

The Bellbird

At school, Miro and Solly brought a Bellbird to school. We had to describe about it even though it was dead. We had to flip it onto it's sides so we can describe about it. Here is my writing!

The Bellbird
Today Miro and Solly brought a bellbird to school that got caught in a radiator on the front of their parents car and it sadly died. The Maori name for the bellbird is Korimako.

The whole school got to see the bellbird. We got to feel the soft deep yellow, green feathers and  underneath the feathers were light grey and they also had a charcoal tail and wings. The bellbirds claws were not as sharp as I thought, but they were pointed. The beak of the bellbird is long and curved and the nostrils are at the end of the beak. Bellbird beaks are curved because the bellbirds drink nectar. The length of the bellbird is roughly 17-18 centimetres long.

I was sad to see that the bellbird had died from the radiator. Question: What is the Maori name for a bellbird? Look for the name up the top and comment on my blog post what the name is.

Wasp Nest

In class, Miro and Solly, two of the students from our class, brought a wasp nest to school and we had to write what it looked, felt and what we thought about it. Here is my description of the wasp nest!

Wasp Nest
Today, Miro brought a wasp nest to class. He got his dad to pour diesel to poison the nest because wasps are pests. He had been picking raspberries, and had spotted it sitting inside a tyre in the back garden.

The wasps have been chewing up wood to make their wasp nest. The outside of the wasp nest has patterns. When we opened the wasps nest up we only saw three columns, but we only opened it up halfway. Only two wasps survived the diesel attack, while the rest died.

When I felt the wasp nest it felt like old shriveled up leaves. The cells in the wasps nest were shaped hexagonal. Surrounding the wasps nest were roots.
I saw a wasp grub come out of one of the cells.

In conclusion, I really like how they brought the wasp nest to school for everyone to see.

Swimming Sports

In class we had to write what happened in Midland Line swimming sports in present tense and tried not to put past tense. Here is my Swimming sports writing!

Waiting ,waiting, waiting. Oh no, it’s time to swim, although I am a pretty good swimmer. Number 6 is on the board now, “Let’s go Sophie.”
I feel the rough concrete as I walk over to the queue.“ Jess, Autumn, Areah, Leah and Sophie, all here!” yells the lady. I think everyone is here. I’m in lane three and as I hop on the diving place, I feel like I am at the Olympic Games.
Is it one length of freestyle?  “ON YOUR MARKS, BANG!” I have to go. SPLASH! 1 2 3! Breathe 1 2 3! Breathe! Now I’m getting into the rhythm of freestyle. Suddenly, there’s a lot of confusion, everyone is in front. I need to get my arm more into the water and push it back to get faster. The little waves are pushing me from side to side near the red and white lane ropes and I try to go the other way. As I get closer and closer to the end I touch the wall. Yay! I came first! I really feel like I am in the Olympic games now.

My next race is coming up close, number 14, I have to wait eight races for my next race, but at least the races go by quite fast.  I look over to the whiteboard. Is she writing number 14? As I go back to the queue it feels like lining up at my swimming lessons for my instructor to see what strokes I can do. As I look around there is a variety of coloured swimming togs. Hopefully I  will win this race. As I jump up on the edge of the pool all I hear is cheering and clapping. 1 2 3 GO! As I look to the side I see the racers zoom ahead to the end. As I touch the end I turn around to go back to the other end of the pool to finish two lengths of freestyle, all I have to do is to get to the end and touch. I try to push myself to the limit. As  the level of the water gets deeper and deeper I touch the end. All I can hear is people cheering. Second is fine, at least there is still a heap of races to go through to the end. I wonder if anyone thinks our school pool is big or not?

As the lady bangs the light pieces of wood, there are splashes of water everywhere. This is race number... oh it’s Olivia’s race! “ GO Olivia GO”.  She gets her rhythm of her freestyle and she comes first place. Now my race number is on the whiteboard. I need to get ready for my race and it’s underwater swim. As I get up from my seat I squeeze past everyone to get in line. As I get up onto the diving position all I hear is shouting from metres away. Bang! As my fingertips hit the water I know I am going to lose the race. After halfway through the pool I feel like I can’t get to the end, but with only just centimetres away my breath starts to run out and as I touch the end all I hear is cheering. I start to get a headache from holding my breath for a long time. What? I am at the end and I’ve won! This is the first time I actually got to the end and it was so fun. It’s time to get dressed, but at least I had a good time swimming.

Summer Poem

In class we have been learning to do a Poem. We had to write a poem about our summer. We had to start with "Remember that time" and at the second to last sentence we had to put "remember how". Here is my Summer Poem!

Summer
Remember that time
When you went to the beach
And saw the waves hit the rocks and splash everywhere
And you smelt the ocean’s salt water
And as you looked over the sea
you saw the sun’s reflection in the calm water?
Remember how you tasted the KFC
that you ate on the beach
after licking the ice cream first
(because it would’ve melted in the sun).
That was summer.

Remember that time
When you did gymnastics on the warm lawn
And you smelt the soft silky grass
As you did a back walkover?
Remember how you were gazing
at the glistening sun
and listening to wind whistling
while sitting in the sand pit
pushing your tired feet through the warm relaxing sand?
That was summer.

Remember that time
When you sat on the motorbike going down the farm
And when you went to the paddock,
the calves would chase you down the fence line?
Remember how one time your mum sped
over the bump round the corner
on the motorbike
in the hot sun
and you nearly fell off

That was summer.
